‘Changed their tune’: Great left baffled by backflip as Galvin’s surprise Bulldogs role revealed

NRL 360 panellist Phil Rothfield says Toby Sexton will keep his starting spot at halfback for the Bulldogs in their holiday Monday clash against the Eels, with Lachlan Galvin to play off the bench.

There had been speculation Galvin would come straight into the team at halfback and replace the off-contract Sexton.

But Rothfield says Canterbury plan to ease Galvin into his new club.

“He won’t go straight in,” Rothfield said on Fox League.

“I’m told from reliable people there that Toby Sexton will be retained as halfback for that monster game against Parramatta.

“I was told before the show from someone very close to the powerbrokers at Canterbury that Toby Sexton will definitely start.

“Now Galvin, when the team is issued, will be in the squad.

“What will happen, he will not start, but he will be somewhere from the bench to 22.

“Cameron Ciraldo has coached him, two sessions, and he’s still slotting in.

“I expect him to start off the bench, probably in jersey 21 or 22.”

Host Braith Anasta said the development was a strange one, given there was talk that Sexton was going to be dropped by the Bulldogs, regardless of whether the club signed Galvin.

“They did say that Sexton was going to be dropped anyway, before they bought Galvin. That was coming out of the Bulldogs so, they’ve changed their tune there?” He asked.

Anasta wondered what the development would mean for the make-up of the Bulldogs’ bench.

“Interesting. With (Galvin) on the bench, (Bailey) Hayward on the bench, they’d have to carry two forwards,” he said.
