‘No mate, see you tomorrow’: Payten’s hilarious quip after captain’s newborn baby joy

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has delivered a hilarious response after Reuben Cotter asked about some time off following the birth of his third child.

Cotter’s wife Mackenzie gave birth to a daughter named Pippi on Thursday, one day before playing a leading role in North Queensland’s 38-32 victory over the Dragons.

When a reporter asked Cotter if he was expecting to have a couple of days off to be with his newborn, Payten smiled and shook his head, leading to laughter from the press gallery.

“I don’t know. Straight into it again?” Cotter asked Payten.

“No mate. See you in the morning,” the Cowboys coach quipped in response.

Cotter was asked whether it was difficult to play so soon after such a momentous occasion.

“I try not to think about it too much I just try and focus on my job for the team,” he said.

“Obviously enjoyed yesterday but we had a job to do today and we obviously needed the win so I locked in on my role for the team.”

The Cowboys kept their season alive with the win, but realistically, will need to win their remaining five games to make the top eight.
